If you grew up in the Caribbean, breadfruit needs no introduction. This humble, versatile fruit has been a staple on Bajan tables for generations — boiled, roasted, fried or mashed, it shows up at almost every meal. But what many people don't realise is that breadfruit isn't just delicious. It is one of the most nutritious foods on the planet.
I'm Kelly Henry — a qualified home chef, ballroom dancer and Gourmand Award-nominated cookbook author from Barbados. I have been cooking with breadfruit my entire life, and today I want to share five powerful reasons why this Caribbean superfood deserves a place in your kitchen — wherever in the world you are.
1. Breadfruit is packed with complex carbohydrates for sustained energy
Unlike simple carbohydrates that cause energy spikes and crashes, breadfruit contains complex carbohydrates that release energy slowly and steadily throughout the day. This makes it the perfect fuel for active people — dancers, athletes, busy parents and anyone who needs energy that lasts. Growing up in Barbados, I always noticed how a breadfruit meal kept me energised for hours. Now I understand the science behind it.
2. Breadfruit is an excellent source of dietary fibre
A single serving of breadfruit provides a significant portion of your daily fibre needs. Dietary fibre supports healthy digestion, helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels, and keeps you feeling full and satisfied for longer. In a world of processed, low-fibre foods, breadfruit is a powerful natural alternative.
3. Breadfruit is rich in essential vitamins and minerals
Breadfruit is a good source of Vitamin C, which supports immune function and skin health. It also contains potassium, which supports heart health and muscle function, as well as magnesium, thiamine and folate. Our grandparents in Barbados ate breadfruit regularly and understood instinctively that it was good for the body. Modern nutrition science confirms everything they already knew.
4. Breadfruit is naturally gluten-free
For anyone with gluten sensitivity or coeliac disease, breadfruit is a wonderful alternative to wheat-based foods. Breadfruit flour is increasingly being used as a gluten-free substitute in baking and cooking around the world — but in Barbados we have always known it as simply good food.
5. Breadfruit was once considered a solution to world hunger
This fact always impresses people — breadfruit is so nutritious and productive that it was historically proposed as a solution to food insecurity in tropical regions. A single breadfruit tree can produce hundreds of fruits per year, requiring very little maintenance. It is one of the most sustainable, productive food sources in the world.
How to eat breadfruit
In Barbados we love breadfruit roasted over an open flame, boiled and served with saltfish, or fried as chips. It can also be mashed like potato, added to soups and stews, or baked. Its mild flavour makes it incredibly versatile and it absorbs the flavours of whatever it is cooked with beautifully.
